Kamale N'goni is a modern West African harp originating from Mali and Burkina Faso. It has a resonant calabash gourd covered in goat skin, a wooden neck, and strings often made of fishing line. Typically tuned pentatonically (5 notes per octave) and played with thumbs and index fingers to produce a mellow, bluesy, and hypnotic sound. Popularized in Wassoulou music, it is used for both rhythmic accompaniment and melodic storytelling.

It's an excellent instrument for sound healing, accompanying yourself while singing or for jamming with friends.

There are two sizes available.

  • 75cm tall, with 8 strings, with classical guitar tuning pegs, usually tuned to A (La) pentatonic, 5 note scale (A, C, D, F, G, A), with a gourd or bamboo bowl resonator of 20cm to 25cm, which is 2500dh.
  • 90cm tall, with 10 strings, with classical guitar tuning pegs, usually tuned to D (Re) pentatonic, 5 note scale (D, F, G, A, C, D), with a gourd or bamboo bowl resonator of 30cm to 40cm, which is 4000dh.

You can easily change the tuning to different scales with either size and use different tuning systems like 440hz or 432hz.

The resonator bowl is usually made from a calabash gourd or bamboo bowl between 25cm 30cm covered with goat skin. The neck and bridge are made from Moroccan hardwoods.
